Indoor Swimming Pool with Air Source Heat Pump

Air source heat pump for pool heating with surrounding underfloor heating

Location Herefordshire
Completed June 2026
Service Air & Ground Source Heat Pumps
Scope Air source heat pump for pool water heating, underfloor heating around the pool surround

The Brief

A private indoor pool in Herefordshire needed a heating solution that could handle two jobs at once: bringing the pool water up to a stable comfort temperature and running the underfloor heating in the stone-tiled surround. The client wanted low running costs and a system that would sit quietly at the back of the building rather than a plant room full of noisy machinery.

What We Did

Ben led the design and installation on site:

  • Air source heat pump: Sized to carry both the pool heat load and the underfloor circuit, with room to modulate rather than short-cycle.
  • Pool water heating: Heat pump tied into the pool circuit through a plate heat exchanger and controls so the pool holds its set temperature without over-running.
  • Underfloor heating around the pool: Manifolds, mixing valves and pipework laid across the surround so the stone floor stays warm underfoot right up to the pool edge.
  • Commissioning and handover: Balanced flow rates, controls set to the client's use pattern, and a walk-through on how the pool and surround controls talk to each other.

The Result

Both loops run off one heat pump. The pool holds temperature reliably, the underfloor keeps the surround warm through the year, and the building runs at meaningfully lower cost than a direct-electric or gas-fired equivalent. It is the kind of project that shows how heat pump work goes well beyond a straight domestic swap out.
